Release Date: October 22, 2008

WASHINGTON – Tom Hughston, Executive Vice President of Roach Howard Smith & Barton (“RHSB”), has been named to the Board of Directors of The Council of Insurance Agents & Brokers, the premier trade association representing leading domestic and international commercial insurance agents and brokers. Tom took office earlier this month at the October 5 Board meeting.

Hughston, whose insurance career spans more than 20 years, joined RHSB in 1991 as a principal and shareholder and was appointed to the board of directors in 1995. In addition to serving the needs of his clients, he oversees the sales and marketing efforts for the firm. Prior to joining RHSB, Tom was an Executive Practice Leader for Chubb Insurance.

Ken A. Crerar, president of The Council, praised Hughston for taking an active leadership role in the commercial insurance industry.

“The Council depends on our board members for advice and guidance on everything from new initiatives that are needed to respond to changing market conditions to strategy regarding our legislative positions on issues that affect commercial agents and brokers. We look forward to working with Tom in the months and years ahead, and I am sure our association will be a productive one,” Crerar said.

“Tom’s contribution to the insurance industry is extensive,” says Karen K. Farris, President and CEO of Roach Howard Smith & Barton. “His appointment to The Council’s board of directors is recognition of his professional achievement, industry stature and expertise.”

The board works in concert with the top officers of The Council. For 2009, Markham R. McKnight, of Baton Rouge, La., and president of BancorpSouth Insurance Services, Inc., is the chairman of The Council. Other Council officers include Vice Chairman H. Wade Reece, president of BB&T Insurance Services of Raleigh, N.C.; Treasurer James R. Pender, honorary chairman of the board of Oswald Companies in Cleveland, Ohio, and chairman emeritus of Oswald, Trippe & Company in Florida; and Secretary David E. McGurn Jr., president, special marketing and international division, Arthur J. Gallagher & Co., Itasca, Ill.

The Council of Insurance Agents & Brokers represents the leading domestic and international insurance agents and brokers who annually place 80 percent of the commercial property/casualty premiums and administer billions of dollars in employee benefits accounts in the United States.
